Rough and Polish diamond movies are available for viewing and download:

• Round + Cushion movies. Round and cushion diamonds are moved together in one film

All films are available in FLM and Quick Time formats.

Inconsistencies in "The French Blue and the Hope"
Letters  Gem & Gemology  Summer 2009

In their article presenting a new model of the French Blue (Spring G&G, pp. 4-19), Farges et al. used a newly discovered lead cast to confirm the possibility of the Hope diamond being cut from the French Blue. During their research, they created a three-dimensional model of the cast based on the shadow projections obtained by an Octonus Helium Rough 1:4 scanner operated by Matrix Diamond Technology. The dimensions of the model are 30.37 x 25.50 x 12.87 mm, which match those of the lead cast within 20 microns accuracy. (This model is available at www.octonus.com/oct/projects/frenchblue.phtml.)

From my analysis of the 3D model, I disagree with some of the statements made in the article...

New Oxygen XRay software is released.

The Oxygen XRay is a software developed to work with 3D models created by CTan program, SkyScan system. Rapid technological change has caught Indian cutters sitting on old technology rough diamond scanners. Visible adsorption spectra and DiamCalc-files of colored gem materials are available for download.

Spectral data was obtained with SF-56A spectrophotometer in the 370 - 770 nm range, 1 nm step in Moscow State University Gemological Center. Spectra were recorded through two opposite parallel windows of the sample in room temperature.

Corresponding absorption spectra used for modeling are available in the Microsoft Excel format.

DiamCalc-files of colored gem materials allow to create in DiamCalc your own colour gemstones of corundum, topaz, zirconium, color fancy diamonds and etc.

The OctoNus clients receive the possibility to use original parametric cuts created by themselves in the Pacor software.
This allows:

1. to use the possibilities of the cut most flexibly and most completely.
2. to create independently and protect your competitive advantage either during the work with new cuts or during the extended work with existing cuts. The cut libraries created by you will be available only to your operators.

You can extend the list of cuts with your original cut(s) using external cut module.
External cut module is a dynamic link library (DLL) that holds the geometry structure of one or several cuts and contains necessary geometrical calculations.
External cut DLL's should be placed in the "cuttings" folder. They may also be loaded within specific commands in configuration files.

The DiamCalc 2.4.0 (build 337) beta version is released.

This is a nonscheduled beta version devoted to the new AGS_2005 appraiser. The goal of the version is to help the gem cutters to determine the final grade of the cut. This version is not a final release, but only a beta, because the rules of the new AGS 2005 appraiser may still be corrected.

The DiamCalc 2.4 has the following new features:

• The Brilliant cut has new parameters: Culet offset and azimuth, Upper and lower facets azimuth.
• The new AGS_2005 appraiser for Brilliant and Prince cuts is added.
• AGS Spread parameter is available.
• AGS Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool lighting (ASET) is added.

The GemAdviser has the following updates:

Helium system is updated. New features of Helium system are available:

1. Image of parameters in the scene.
2. Automatic diagnostics of diamond shift during scanning process.

7. Time of scanning is decreased significantly. The overall improvement (scanning and building of model) in the speed is about 25%.
8. Modes of scanning were changed and improved. Method "Optimum" was changed and now it takes about 23 sec and at the same time accuracy of this method only 1,5 times less than "Accuracy" mode which takes about 45 sec.

We updated AGA system for DiamCalc instead of previous cut grade system of 1999 year. Now we use information of 2004 year from www.gemappraisers.com. Grade systems for fancy cuts like Princess, Marquise, Emerald are renewed.

For using the new AGA cut grade system please follow the instruction:

1. Download the new file Appraise.txt.
2. Replace the file Appraise.txt in folder where you installed DiamCalc with new one which you download (default folder: C:\Program Files\OctoNus Software\Diamond Calculator 2.3.1).
3. Restart DiamCalc.exe.

Diamond Calculator - is a system to model polished gemstones, which enables precise calculation of the weight and determination of the cut proportions. The real (photorealistic) image of a polished diamond created by the system makes it possible to determine the cut parameters that cannot be measured directly and to select the optimal combination of the parameters to obtain the best perception (luster, brilliance, fire) of the stone. Necessary cut parameters can be obtained by comparison of the real diamond to a computer image.
